Fall of the Western Roman Empire
The Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD. The Eastern Roman Empire, later known as the Byzantine Empire, survived for almost another thousand years. Constantinople, the capital city, was finally conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1453. The Turks renamed the city Istanbul and converted Hagia Sophia (pictured above), once the largest church in the Christian world, into an Islamic mosque.
